Concept Note:
On December 10, every year, Human Rights Day is observed globally. It was on this day that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. The UDHR proclaims the inalienable rights that every human being on earth is entitled to regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national and social origin, property, birth or other status.
For the year 2021, the United Nations has declared the theme as EQUALITY. And together, nations look forward to work towards reducing inequalities and advancing human rights. In a world in which one’s vision has been refracted through years of conditioning into categories and sub-categories in differentiating human race, it is necessary to educate and sensitize ourselves about cultural and social diversities. Article 1 of the UDHR proclaims, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.”. But in today’s world, human beings are born with burdens of multiple identities that define them. And based on these identities, they are discriminated against and denied basic human rights in many instances.
Sikkim Alpine University organizes this one-day National Symposium with the sole agenda of educating and creating awareness about the importance of human rights in order to redefine the idea of development and enhance and facilitate the formation of a better tomorrow.
