Sikkim Alpine University Celebrated World Environment Day
Sikkim Alpine University situated at Namchi celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June.
The Registrar, Professor H. K. Rajput officially flagged the day by inaugurating the “Host Plant- Butterfly
Garden” and planting the first tree with a pledge to contribute the best to the planet.
A large scale plantation drive was undertaken by the students and faculties of the university by planting
over hundreds of saplings donated by the Forest Department, South Sikkim. In order to motivate the
young learners towards building strong sustainable culture on the campus, an array of awareness events
and activities were organized in which two invited guest speakers – Mr. Kul Prasad Chettri, social activist
and Mr. Sanjay Rai, Co-founder of VOICE spoke on Voluntary Blood & Organ Donation and Environment
Conservation respectively followed by essay writing and painting competition on this year’s global
theme “Only One Earth”.
The day concluded with the solidarity with state’s focus on local species Butterfly Conservation and
reassurance of its long-term vision of being the flag bearer of sustainable development amongst the
academic institutions in the region.
