His doctoral research, titled “Pollination Biology of Mandarin Orange (Citrus reticulata Blanco) in the Darjeeling and Sikkim Himalayas”, focused on pollinator diversity, pollination requirements, and their impact on fruit yield, contributing valuable insights regarding pollination ecology in mandarin orchards in the Eastern Himalayas.
  • Prior to his academic appointment, he worked as a Junior Research Fellow (December 2017 – March 2020) under the JICA-assisted Sikkim Biodiversity and Forest Management Project, Forest and Environment Department, Government of Sikkim. His research project, “Study of Oak forest ecosystem in Sikkim Himalaya with special reference to climate change, plant species diversity and distribution”, strengthened his expertise in forest ecology, biodiversity assessment, and climate change impacts.
  • His research interests include pollination ecology, ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation, genotoxicity studies, soil and agricultural ecology, and human–environment interactions.
  • Dr. Gurung has published in reputed journals and edited volumes on topics such as firewood extraction patterns, ecotourism and sustainability, pollination requirements in horticultural crops, and comparative soil ecology.
